Update 0.8.2: Advanced Tactics & Player Roles

The Tactics page gains a granular tactical layer with real trade-offs — mentality, tempo, pressing, defensive line, width, directness, tackling and more — plus six named style presets from Tiki-Taka to Park the Bus. Each starter can also be assigned a position-specific role and up to six individual instructions, all feeding the match engine and shifting your team's attack, defence, midfield, fatigue and card profile.

Version 0.8.2 gives the tactician something every football manager craves: control with consequence. Two systems land together on the Tactics page — a granular Advanced Tactics layer where every dial carries a trade-off, and a Player Roles panel that lets you specialise each member of your starting eleven. Both feed the match engine the moment you set them, and both are neutral until you touch them, so existing saves pick everything up without a single result changing.

The headline is Advanced Tactics. Beneath the familiar formation and tactical-style selectors sits a new panel with six one-tap style presets — Tiki-Taka, Gegenpress, Park the Bus, Route One, Counter-Punch, and Total Football. Tap one and the whole granular layer snaps to a coherent philosophy: Tiki-Taka sets a slow tempo, narrow width, short passing and a high press; Gegenpress goes frenetic, wide, and aggressively hunts the ball; Park the Bus drops deep, stands off, and wastes time when winning. Presets are a starting point — every setting they set can then be tweaked individually.

The granular controls are where the trade-offs live. Ten dimensions are each a segmented row of options: Mentality (Very Defensive through All-Out Attack), Tempo, Width, Directness, Pressing (Stand Off to Gegenpress), Defensive Line, Attacking Focus, Tackling, Time-Wasting, and Set Pieces. A live "Impact" bar sits above them, showing exactly what your current combination is doing to Attack, Defence, Midfield, Fatigue and Cards — each as a percentage, green when it helps and red when it hurts. Push Mentality to All-Out Attack and you watch Attack climb +20% while Defence drops −18%; switch to Gegenpress and Fatigue jumps +30% alongside a +30% Cards penalty. The numbers come from the same modifiers the simulation uses, so the preview you read is the effect the match engine applies.

And the engine really does apply them. The high-impact levers feed three places in the match simulation. Mentality, tempo, directness and width scale your team's attack, defence and midfield strength — which flows straight into expected goals on both sides of the ball. Tempo and pressing intensity multiply the fitness your players drain each match, so a frenetic gegenpress leaves your squad more exhausted than a stand-off approach. And pressing aggression plus tackling intensity scale the probability of yellow and red cards, meaning an aggressive, hard-tackling side will pick up more bookings. Every effect stacks multiplicatively on top of your existing tactical-style preset, so the granular layer refines rather than replaces it.

The second system is Player Roles & Individual Instructions. A new panel lists your starting eleven, each row expandable to reveal a role selector and six instruction toggles. Roles are position-specific: goalkeepers choose between a Shot Stopper (better saving, less distribution) and a Sweeper Keeper (starts attacks, sweeps up); defenders pick from Ball-Playing Defender, Wing-Back, or No-Nonsense Defender; midfielders from Box-to-Box, Playmaker, Defensive Mid, or Wide Midfielder; and attackers from Poacher, Target Man, Complete Forward, and Winger. Each role shifts that player's contribution to attack, defence, and midfield in a way that matches what the role actually does on the pitch — a Wing-Back boosts attack but weakens defence; a Playmaker lifts midfield; a Defensive Mid anchors the back line at the cost of going forward.

Individual instructions sit beneath the role. Six toggles per player — Stay Back, Get Forward, Press More, Shoot on Sight, Mark Tighter, and Free Role — each carrying its own trade-off. Press More sharpens your defence but costs fitness and invites cards; Free Role unlocks attack and midfield at the expense of defensive responsibility; Stay Back shores up the defence but dampens attacking output. A per-player effect preview shows the combined result of role plus active instructions, so you always know what a given assignment is doing to that man's game. The role modifiers are averaged across each positional line and applied to your team strength, so a back four of Wing-Backs plays noticeably more expansively than four No-Nonsense Defenders.

Both systems are designed to be optional and legacy-safe. Nothing changes the moment you load a save — roles default to "Auto" and the tactical settings default to Balanced across the board, so every result stays identical until you deliberately assign a role or shift a setting. New careers start with the full granular layer at neutral. And because the same modifier functions power both the match engine and the on-screen previews, what you see on the Tactics page is exactly what shapes the result when you press Play Match. Load any save, open Tactics, and start dialling in your philosophy — no restart needed.
